Coffee with Nellie

He and Dean had gotten to New York last Friday night, so Sam had made arrangements to meet Nellie for coffee after he got a few hours of sleep. There was a Starbucks across from Central Park and while Dean played Meet the Parents, Sam slipped out from Anna's place and made his way to meet her.

He sat on a brick wall outside the store, hands in his pockets as he waited to see the familiar face in the sea of strangers. He instinctively pulled the jacket tighter around him, still getting used to the cold after having been nice in Tijuana.

"Nope, I've got it covered."

It wasn't about the money. Not like Sam was really paying for it either. It was just a thing. A guy pays for the girl thing.

She smiled and nodded. "Thanks, Sam." It wasn't about the money to her either. She just didn't want him to think he had to pay for her. But she found it sweet of him to do so, no matter how small the gesture.

"So, what have you been up to?" He asked, trying to stay on safe topics.

"Nothin' much. I spent a week in Miami, now seein' New York. Guess at some point I'll go home."

"Trying to get in as many tourist destinations before the new year that you can get?" he teased.

She shrugged. "Maybe I am. Any ideas where I should try next?"

"New Orleans or Vegas. Both sound pretty good."

"Hmm..Vegas, huh? Haven't been there in awhile." She smirked at the thought.

"Only been once myself, but I was a kid then. Kinda got left in the hotel room mostly."

She shook her head and carried her hot chocolate over to a small table. "Now that's a shame. Vegas is far too much fun to miss as an adult."

"Knowing my luck, I'll get drunk and married down there. Probably better if I stay away."

She laughed. "No offense, darlin', but I don't wanna go with you if that's your luck."

"None taken." Sam smirked. He took a long drink from his coffee and sighed happily. "There, now I feel better."

She nodded and placed her chin in her hand to study him. A small smirk came to her lips. "Startin' to look better already."

He bit his lip a bit, the cold red cheeks hiding his blush well enough.

She chuckled slightly. "Still cold?"

"A bit. But I'm getting there. Unless you want to go for a walk, then I'll brave it."

She shook her head. "I'm used to the warm weather of Texas myself. I'm just fine sittin' in here."

"Me too." Though finding a way to arrange his legs under the table was going to be interesting.

"Is your father coming out here to meet you for the holidays?"

She pretended not to notice the shuffling. "Uh..no. He's gotta business trip. But..you know, it's okay. I'm here with my friends family."

He snorted a bit because he knew that feeling of Dad never having time to be with the family because of business.

"As long as you've got someone, at least. Better than being by yourself."

She nodded."I was going to, but Val wasn't about to let me." She moved her arms to the table to lean against it. "And you? I mean...I know you don't...like the holidays, but..do you have plans?"

"Well... Anna's probably gonna pull Dean into something. Which means he's gonna pull me into something so he isn't outnumbered by females wanting to rip him into little pieces and put him under a microscope." Sam chuckled a bit.

"Oh, exciting. Well...if you get bored...you should give me a call."

"Would you feel bad if I made you my excuse to get out of a sticky situation when they start doing the family thing?" He smiled. "I'd much rather spend it with you."
