Coffee with Nellie

He and Dean had gotten to New York last Friday night, so Sam had made arrangements to meet Nellie for coffee after he got a few hours of sleep. There was a Starbucks across from Central Park and while Dean played Meet the Parents, Sam slipped out from Anna's place and made his way to meet her.

He sat on a brick wall outside the store, hands in his pockets as he waited to see the familiar face in the sea of strangers. He instinctively pulled the jacket tighter around him, still getting used to the cold after having been nice in Tijuana.

She nodded."I was going to, but Val wasn't about to let me." She moved her arms to the table to lean against it. "And you? I mean...I know you don't...like the holidays, but..do you have plans?"

"Well... Anna's probably gonna pull Dean into something. Which means he's gonna pull me into something so he isn't outnumbered by females wanting to rip him into little pieces and put him under a microscope." Sam chuckled a bit.

"Oh, exciting. Well...if you get bored...you should give me a call."

"Would you feel bad if I made you my excuse to get out of a sticky situation when they start doing the family thing?" He smiled. "I'd much rather spend it with you."

She chewed her lip, a bit of a shy look coming to her eyes. "That's fine by me. Maybe you can meet Ben."

"Ben?"

She tilted her head at him and watched him, then without breaking a smile answered, "My son."

Sam just blinked. "You... you didn't tell me you were a mother."

Yeah, he was pretty shocked.

"I didn't? Oh...well, you know. After a year or so you kinda forget. Especially since he's usually off living with a nanny."

Sam's lips pursed at that. "Oh." He sat back a bit. He didn't like hearing that. He knew what it was like growing up never seeing a parent except for moments here and there.

"So he doesn't live with his father?"

She really hadn't thought she was that good of an actress. Surely he couldn't think she'd abandon a kid. Her brows rose and she slid her hand out to his gently. "Sam...I was kiddin'."

His hand was tapping on the table before she took his and he let out the deep breath he was holding in.

"Sorry. After my mom died, my dad became obsessed with his job. Dean basically raised me because he was come and go, sometimes for weeks at a time."

She nodded and unintentionally her fingers tightened around his. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to freak you out. ...I know the feelin' though. Daddy went on a lot of business trips, so our help took care'a me a lot."

"It was just me, Dean, and a motel room in another town every few weeks." He squeezed back. "It's not a fun way to spend your childhood."

Her thumb brushed his hand. "Well you had Dean. Makes you real lucky. Seems...he really takes care of you." She glanced down, not having any real knowledge of what it was like to have an older sibling.

"Yeah. When he's not being an idiot and telling me how to live it." Sam smiled a bit.

"He do that a lot?"

"Dean? Yeah. All the time. Sometimes I listen, and sometimes I tell him to go to..." Sam sighed, looking away a moment like he was trying not to think about something.

"He's a good guy and means well, so i can't get too pissed at him."

She nodded. "Ben tries to do the same thing. He's actually one of my only friends. I've known him my whole life so he's the only thing like a brother I know."

"It's good to have them in the end. I don't know what I'd do without him."

Actually, Sam did, and he didn't like it.

She sighed softly and just sat quietly with him, her fingers through his, unsure what to say.

"So what's Santa getting your for Christmas?"

She smirked playfully. "Other than you? I don't know, guess we'll see. What do you want to get?"

There was no hiding that bit of a blush as he rubbed the back of his neck. "I dunno. Never really celebrated. Been a long time since I got a real present."

Beyond porn magazines that is.

She frowned. "That's a shame. I gotta present for you...if you want."
