Coffee with Nellie

He and Dean had gotten to New York last Friday night, so Sam had made arrangements to meet Nellie for coffee after he got a few hours of sleep. There was a Starbucks across from Central Park and while Dean played Meet the Parents, Sam slipped out from Anna's place and made his way to meet her.

He sat on a brick wall outside the store, hands in his pockets as he waited to see the familiar face in the sea of strangers. He instinctively pulled the jacket tighter around him, still getting used to the cold after having been nice in Tijuana.

She brushed her lips to his gently. "Merry Christmas, Sam."

He smiled, shifting a bit more forward to kiss her back. "Thank you."

She smiled back, biting her lip. "Spend New Years with me...you might get another."

"I'll find out if we're going to be in town that long and get back to you on that."

"Good. I'll be around still. Nothing quite beats New Years in Times Square."

"The thought of standing out on the street for 8 hours to watch a ball drop doesn't really do much for me. Sorry." He shrugged, but stayed close.

"Hmm..well...what about a warm room with champagne that just...overlooks it all?"

Sam bit his lip, then looked at his hands. "I'd love to. But... I don't want you to think I'm only in this for sex, Nellie. I'm not that kind of guy. I can't just be a fling. I... I just don't have that kind of mindset."

His leg was bouncing a bit under the table. "I like you. And i want to know you that if you want to keep seeing me, I'm going to want to actually know you. Have some kind of relationship, even if it's just a bit more than friends. And it means that we're going to fight and bicker at times."

"Is that something you want from me? Because I don't want to hurt you if you just want a bed buddy and nothing more."

She looked down nervously as he spoke, and kept quiet for a few minutes after he'd finished. She sighed lightly and looked up. "I...don't really know how to do that, Sam. I'm..." she glanced out the window, a bit ashamed. "I'm not usually the girl a guy wants for more than a fling..." she started chewing her lip again before glancing back at him. "Can...can we try to find something in between?"

"How can you say that without known' me?"

"Because I have a way of reading people." Hi, I'm psychic... yeah, not one of those things to say on dates, Sammy..

"Plus, even friends are more than just bed buddies. I want to get to know you."

She smiled brighter now. "I'd like to get to know you, too. And...that room offer was...with or without the sex. Just...a nice way to see it all at my Daddy's expensive. If you were interested."

"Let me check in with my brother and see what we're doing, and I'll get back to you then. It sounds wonderful."

"And I even have a tux I can wear. Just for the occasion."

She laughed, covering her mouth. "You can wear a tux if you want, darlin', but I'm goin' casual."

"I'd rather not. Wait, you aren't going to go all out fancy with the big party and the fancy dining then?"

He smiled. Because he liked that, if she didn't always want everything to be princess fancy perfect.

She shook her head. "No, it should be pretty easy and relaxed. Wear what you want. It's at Ben's family's place, which..yea it's really nice, but they're totally cool people. Just...fun with friends," she smiled. Then she realized she hadn't told him it was the Malone's party. "You'll come still, right? If you can?"

"Of course. If I can." He nodded, trying not to be hesitant. He wasn't sure he'd do well around others, but he could try.

"I'm just... not good with strangers sometimes..." he admitted.

"Well...if it ends up not bein' your thing, I'll just steal you away for myself."

"Will you now?"
