Coffee with Nellie

He and Dean had gotten to New York last Friday night, so Sam had made arrangements to meet Nellie for coffee after he got a few hours of sleep. There was a Starbucks across from Central Park and while Dean played Meet the Parents, Sam slipped out from Anna's place and made his way to meet her.

He sat on a brick wall outside the store, hands in his pockets as he waited to see the familiar face in the sea of strangers. He instinctively pulled the jacket tighter around him, still getting used to the cold after having been nice in Tijuana.

"It was just me, Dean, and a motel room in another town every few weeks." He squeezed back. "It's not a fun way to spend your childhood."

Her thumb brushed his hand. "Well you had Dean. Makes you real lucky. Seems...he really takes care of you." She glanced down, not having any real knowledge of what it was like to have an older sibling.

"Yeah. When he's not being an idiot and telling me how to live it." Sam smiled a bit.

"He do that a lot?"

"Dean? Yeah. All the time. Sometimes I listen, and sometimes I tell him to go to..." Sam sighed, looking away a moment like he was trying not to think about something.

"He's a good guy and means well, so i can't get too pissed at him."

She nodded. "Ben tries to do the same thing. He's actually one of my only friends. I've known him my whole life so he's the only thing like a brother I know."

"It's good to have them in the end. I don't know what I'd do without him."

Actually, Sam did, and he didn't like it.

She sighed softly and just sat quietly with him, her fingers through his, unsure what to say.

"So what's Santa getting your for Christmas?"

She smirked playfully. "Other than you? I don't know, guess we'll see. What do you want to get?"

There was no hiding that bit of a blush as he rubbed the back of his neck. "I dunno. Never really celebrated. Been a long time since I got a real present."

Beyond porn magazines that is.

She frowned. "That's a shame. I gotta present for you...if you want."

His eyebrow raised. "Really? I mean, I didn't think I'd ever see you again... and you got me a gift?"

She smiled and leaned forward on the table, motioning him closer with a free finger.

He leaned forward as well, curious.

She brushed her lips to his gently. "Merry Christmas, Sam."

He smiled, shifting a bit more forward to kiss her back. "Thank you."

She smiled back, biting her lip. "Spend New Years with me...you might get another."

"I'll find out if we're going to be in town that long and get back to you on that."

"Good. I'll be around still. Nothing quite beats New Years in Times Square."

"The thought of standing out on the street for 8 hours to watch a ball drop doesn't really do much for me. Sorry." He shrugged, but stayed close.

"Hmm..well...what about a warm room with champagne that just...overlooks it all?"

Sam bit his lip, then looked at his hands. "I'd love to. But... I don't want you to think I'm only in this for sex, Nellie. I'm not that kind of guy. I can't just be a fling. I... I just don't have that kind of mindset."

His leg was bouncing a bit under the table. "I like you. And i want to know you that if you want to keep seeing me, I'm going to want to actually know you. Have some kind of relationship, even if it's just a bit more than friends. And it means that we're going to fight and bicker at times."

"Is that something you want from me? Because I don't want to hurt you if you just want a bed buddy and nothing more."

She looked down nervously as he spoke, and kept quiet for a few minutes after he'd finished. She sighed lightly and looked up. "I...don't really know how to do that, Sam. I'm..." she glanced out the window, a bit ashamed. "I'm not usually the girl a guy wants for more than a fling..." she started chewing her lip again before glancing back at him. "Can...can we try to find something in between?"
