Coffee with Nellie

He and Dean had gotten to New York last Friday night, so Sam had made arrangements to meet Nellie for coffee after he got a few hours of sleep. There was a Starbucks across from Central Park and while Dean played Meet the Parents, Sam slipped out from Anna's place and made his way to meet her.

He sat on a brick wall outside the store, hands in his pockets as he waited to see the familiar face in the sea of strangers. He instinctively pulled the jacket tighter around him, still getting used to the cold after having been nice in Tijuana.

Nellie left the Malone house quickly and quietly. She hadn't quite told Ben that she was going to meet up with the same guy she'd been bitching about just the week before. She had a feeling he wouldn't quite like it.

As she made it around the corner and got closer to the Starbucks, she spotted Sam towering over everyone else. Being that she was on the shorter side, she doubted he saw her until she came to a stop in front of him. Her smile came shyly.

"Hey Sam."

He was about to blow on his hands to warm them when Nellie appeared in front of him and he gave her a small smile back. "Hey Nellie. You're looking good."

He had been sleeping in the Impala for three days, then spent last night on the floor because he didn't fit on the couch. He could really use a good night's sleep.

She smiled more and clasped her hands behind her back with a slight head tilt. "And you're lookin' kinda tired," she commented. "And cold."

"Correct on both. But I think I can feel better if I can get a grande cup filled with straight espresso." Sam smiled a bit, going to open the doors for her.

"Then we should get you that," she nodded. She moved through the door. "Thank you." Then she found her way into the line and waited on Sam to join her, as she stared up at the menu.

He came up behind her, hands back in his pockets. "You know I've never actually been to New York during the holidays. It looks cleaner."

She laughed at that and turned to look up at him. "What do ya mean?"

"I dunno. Less trash. Buildings look shinier." He shrugged.

"It's the snow," she nodded. "And the cloudy sky." She smirked. "Gives the illusion of a clean city."

"Maybe that's it." He smiled a bit.

They got to the counter and he pulled out his wallet and gave his order. "And I' have whatever she wants as well," he stated, handing over a credit card.

"Just a hot chocolate," she nodded. She glanced up at Sam. "I can get it if you want.."

"Nope, I've got it covered."

It wasn't about the money. Not like Sam was really paying for it either. It was just a thing. A guy pays for the girl thing.

She smiled and nodded. "Thanks, Sam." It wasn't about the money to her either. She just didn't want him to think he had to pay for her. But she found it sweet of him to do so, no matter how small the gesture.

"So, what have you been up to?" He asked, trying to stay on safe topics.

"Nothin' much. I spent a week in Miami, now seein' New York. Guess at some point I'll go home."

"Trying to get in as many tourist destinations before the new year that you can get?" he teased.

She shrugged. "Maybe I am. Any ideas where I should try next?"

"New Orleans or Vegas. Both sound pretty good."

"Hmm..Vegas, huh? Haven't been there in awhile." She smirked at the thought.

"Only been once myself, but I was a kid then. Kinda got left in the hotel room mostly."

She shook her head and carried her hot chocolate over to a small table. "Now that's a shame. Vegas is far too much fun to miss as an adult."

"Knowing my luck, I'll get drunk and married down there. Probably better if I stay away."

She laughed. "No offense, darlin', but I don't wanna go with you if that's your luck."

"None taken." Sam smirked. He took a long drink from his coffee and sighed happily. "There, now I feel better."

She nodded and placed her chin in her hand to study him. A small smirk came to her lips. "Startin' to look better already."
