[the write place] December: Dang

They would go away for weeks, even months at a time now. There had been fights, but Sam was adamant to stay in one school for his senior year. So the hotel had become a home base where Sam snuck out early in the morning to get to school before people wondered why he didn't ride the bus. He stayed late in the public library so he didn't have to go "home" right away.

His girlfriend, who he started to date right after homecoming, took pity on him and invited him to dinner at her place at least twice a week. Her mother fell in love with the sweet boy her daughter liked, and insisted that he was too skinny and needed to eat. So he was well fed for the first time in his life, learning that there was more to meals than Lucky Charms and McDonald's fries.

Pastor Jim helped him figure out how to file for colleges. They both knew that John Winchester was expecting Sam to give up on the schooling after this year, but Sam liked school. He wanted to do something more than just killing demons. He'd be happier if he never saw a demon again for the rest of his life, in fact. That was going to be an argument he would have to face with his father sooner or later.

But the fact he wanted out of this life didn't stop him from sleeping with a gun under his bed at night. He was a dreamer, but he wasn't stupid either.

It was a night in the middle of December that John and Dean came back from the hunt that took them away just after school had started. Sam had been fast asleep with the heat on high as he worked to fit hit body on the bed and manage to be near it. He heard the purr of the Impala as it pulled up to park outside the room, and Sam had barely woken up when the door burst open and Dean came strolling in.

"Sammy, you missed all the fun!" he laughed as he tossed his bag onto the foot of Sam's bed. The teenager sat up, rubbing his eyes as John entered behind his older son.

"Dean, quiet down. You'll wake the neighbors," Sam muttered.

"Ah, they shouldn't sleeping this early anyway. How you been, kiddo? Still working away at those books?" Dean locked his brother in a headlock and proceeded to ruffle the younger boy's longer hair.

"Dean, knock it off," Sam muttered, pushing his brother off him and onto the other bed.

John finished walking around the room, having checked the salt lines and other wards he had left, satisfied that they were still in place. "Everything been alright while we've been gone?" he asked.

"Yeah. Kept people out, cleaned up after myself and not bothered anyone. Just like you said."

John nodded and sat down at the desk, taking his boots off. "Good. I figure we can take a few days off, look and find out where we're needed next, and head out after your semester's over."

Sam blinked. "No, I have one semester left before I graduate. I can't go."

"Sam."

"Dad, you promised. You said I could finish high school here. I have friends here."

Dean smirked. "I think he means a girlfriend."

"Shut up, jerkface," Sam tossed a look at his brother but he was already blushing.

"Sammy has a girlfriend..." Dean teased, which launched the straggly 18 year old out of his bed and at his brother for a rough and tumble fight on the ground while John watched in amusement. Finally when Dean had Sam pinned on the ground did John shake his head.

"Dean, stop teasing your bother. We just got back."

"You're lucky," Dean stated, but climbed off Sam and held a hand out to help him up. Sam rolled his eyes and took the hand, letting Dean pull him up.

The room was quiet a moment, and it was then that Sam realized that for the first time in his life... he was looking down at his brother. Dean's eyes widened and he took a step back.

"Dang, Sam. What the hell happened to you?"

Rubbing the back of his neck, he looked at John a moment, but his father was leaning back with a curious smirk on his face. "I grew a few inches. It's no big deal."

"No big deal. You're like fricken Chewbacca now."

Sam rolled his eyes and gave his brother a look. "Shut up." There was a pause as a smile grew on Sam's lips. "Shortie."

Dean glared back, not liking that. "Bitch."

"Jerk."

John just rubbed his eyes and got up, heading for the bathroom to clean up while the boys started to fight again. Some things just never change.
