ooc: this is a new verse that
jstliketherifle created in which Sam and Dean are on opposite sides. Dean posted the end of the verse here and this is the beginning. Warning on the previous link as there is a MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH.
Oh, and spoilers for Season 4 all over the place...
Sam Winchester sat in the pew of the church, staring up at the cross of Jesus. The man who had died for the sins of the people. Who had given his life over to the judge, walked with a thorny crown, and had his hands and feet nailed to a cross.
Humiliation. Acceptance. Knowing that he was dying so that others would be able to live with forgiveness of their sins, even if many on that day did not deserve to.
His bags were at the end of the pew beside him, and he rubbed his jaw at the bruise forming there. It wasn't his first, nor would it be his last. But this one hurt more than any other had ever.
"You said that you had stopped. You said that she was gone! How the hell am I supposed to believe ANYTHING you say anymore, Sam?"
"I'm trying to help people, Dean. People that your angel friends are telling you to let die for the greater good! We've never let that become our course of action!"
"I know, Sammy. But things are changing. We're fighting against fallen angels here. This isn't just a shape shifter or a rogue demon. And the angels are a good line of defense that need to be used!"
"And they want me dead."
"Because you're using these damn powers!"
"I'm using them because they are helping save the people you're about to kill!"
"And what about the long run, huh? You think about that ever, Sam? What these powers are going to do to your soul? You're the religious one, for God's sake, and you're going to turn against the Angels?!"
"And you're the one who hated doing this and wanted nothing to do with it, and just to be you and me, like it's always been. And now you're siding with them against ME? What the hell happened to backing me up?"
"What happened to you actually listening to me and keeping your damn promises to me?"
"Maybe if you actually kept one to me for once. Dad told you to protect me, Dean. Not side with the angels that want to kill me. And the one time I do need you, you fuck up. Like always."
The fist flew before Sam saw it, and he tasted the blood in his mouth as he fell to the ground, Dean standing over him with eyes more angry than Sam had ever seen them aimed at him. "Get. Out." Dean managed to growl, his own hand dripping from where he had busted his knuckles on his brother's chin.
"Fine."
That had been the day before. Sam had waited until Dean had gone for a drive to break into the hotel room and get his things, and now he was waiting for Ruby to arrive with a car for him. If Dean wouldn't understand, then Sam would fight the war his way, and eventually they could try to meet in the middle.
But he needed to find a way to understand what was happening, and so he sat in the church for hours, just staring at the cross until he heard the faint flutter of wings and felt the eyes on him.
"Sam."
Castiel's voice. Sam had seen how the angel had become a confidant to Dean for the last year. They were actually a lot alike, even if they were from different species. And some part of Sam actually had wanted to understand him.
"He's going to be better off without me," Sam said.
"The world is better off without you." Uriel. Sam grit his teeth and stood up, turning to look at the two angels in the aisle. "You did not heed the warnings you were given. Did you think that your brother would always forgive you?"
"He's my brother. That's what he's supposed to do."
"You have been nothing but a thorn in your brother's side since birth, Sam Winchester. And it is one I have been waiting to pluck out for years now." Uriel gave Sam a dark smile.
"Enough." Castiel, always the mediator.
"Castiel, he is no longer needed. It is our orders to destroy him if he turns from his path."
"We are in the house of our Father, Uriel. As long as he is within these walls, Sam has sanctuary." Castiel looked at Sam. "Sam, do not do this. You can still be saved, but if you join forces with the demons, there is nothing we can do."
"I'm sorry, but I can't do this. There are options you're unwilling to use that would help save lives."
"Using your powers will damn your soul, Sam."
"Better my soul than the deaths of hundreds. Thousands."
Uriel snorted. "The war will continue, Sam. And we will be victorious, or all of creation will die."
"I'm not going to let Lilith win."
"You will. You just don't see it yet. And I look forward to being the one to stop you." Glowering at Castiel, the larger angel vanished in a flutter of wind.
"Castiel..."
"Sit, Sam."
Nodding, Sam did so, and Castiel sat beside him. "Sam. You know in your heart that this path is wrong. Yet you are taking it."
Sam looked back up at the cross and sighed. "Sometimes we take a path we know if going to lead to our death, because we know that in the end, it will at least matter to at least one person."
"Your brother will need you."
"No, he doesn't. He thinks he does." Sam looked at Castiel. "I need to do this for both of us. Together we are stronger, but we are also weaker. I am keeping him from what he needs to do, and same with him for me. We're fighting the same war, Castiel. Just from different angles."
"I will not be able to save you if you do this."
"I know. I'm not asking you too." Sam took a deep breath. "I want you to save Dean. If anyone in our family deserves to be saved, it's him."
"Sam..."
"Cas, as long as I'm alive, Dean will keep going. He's going to need someone to watch over him. Promise me you'll stay there with him."
"I go where Father tells me to."
Frustrated, Sam ran his fingers through his hair. "I know that! I... I know. But please. I'm asking you... my last prayer is just for someone to watch after my brother and protect him. And I want that to be you. Out of any of the angels I've met, you're the only one I trust to make sure he is safe."
Castiel was quiet a moment, looking upwards a moment before nodded. "I will."
"Thank you."
The door to the church opened and Ruby stood in the doorway. She saw Sam with Castiel and scowled, crossing her arms and leaning in the entrance way. "Your taxi's here, and the meter's running," she stated.
"Sam." Castiel reached into his pocket and handed Sam a small, cold bundle. Sam opened his hand to see a tiny metal cross on a silver chain. "God will not forget about you, even as you turn your back on us. I can no longer help you, but if you find yourself at another crossroad that can bring you back to us, we will be there. God will always welcome back his lost sheep."
Nodding, Sam put the necklace on and took one last took at the crucifix. Then he grabbed his bags and left to where Ruby was waiting, and then the door shut behind him.
Uriel appeared beside Castiel again. "You believe that he will be back, don't you?"
Castiel looked at the cross again. "Everyone believes in miracles." He looked at Uriel. "You heard the order?"
"Yes. We are not to kill Sam Winchester. Yet."
"As long as he lives, Dean will continue to fight. Therefore he will not die by our hands."
"It will make him a target of the Fallen. I at least will be merciful and make it fast on the mud-monkey."
"This is the path Sam has chosen. What happens to him is no longer our concern as long as he does not come against us. And perhaps he will survive this war and come back."
