Letters: Dean
It's been waiting in the glove box. Sam knew eventually his brother would find it there. He's also pretty sure that his brother wouldn't want a letter. But there's something that Sam needs to say to Dean... and the package is thick because something is inside of it.
Dean -
Thank you for being my brother. I couldn't have asked for anyone better. For all our fights and problems, I wouldn't be who I am, or have the strength to do what I have to, if it wasn't for you.
I'm going to miss you. But I had a chance to be normal. Now it's yours. Don't screw it up, or Bobby has instructions to kick your ass for me.
... when you died, I made mistakes. But the one thing that helped was having someone at my side. That's why I was blinded by Ruby when you came back. You've got better options, and she'll make the pain fade, I promise. Just trust her to take care of you for awhile, and you'll see... and eventually you'll be able to just remember those good times again when you think of me.
Time to go. Take care of yourself, and don't do anything stupid.
Oh, and one other thing. You dropped this.
- Sam
included in the note is the necklace that Sam had given his brother as a kid. He had fished it out of the trashcan before leaving the motel, and had been hoping to find a time to give it back. This was the only way he felt he could still do it.

no subject
Dean didn't want a letter.
He was somewhat relieved when he went through what Sam had left behind and there wasn't anything for him specifically. Not that he'd lose anything of what had remained, or whatever they had stored ... anywhere. But he didn't want a letter, and not getting one was another nod from Sammy. That he had done what he did out of strength, not weakness. And all that.
It was when he was pulled off for slight speeding (no sweat, false license, all back to the road in ten minutes) that he felt something that shouldn't be there in the glove box. He hadn't passed the first turn after he started driving when he dug out the note to look at what it was. He saw. He swore, quietly, then clamped his mouth shut, a muscle on his cheek dancing. And he kept on driving.
Eventually, he had to stop. And because he needed to, he had to read it. By the time he slipped the familiar amulet out of the folded paper, he was crying.
He didn't want a letter. He didn't even want this, even as he slipped the strap over his head, the familiar feel of it under his shirt its own stab of ache; he didn't want the promises of relief, or threats; he didn't want... any of what he had.
Even if it was what he was left with, and he would keep on going with it.
He wanted his brother back.
But he was good.
