ooc: inspired by this picture. Takes place the morning after this.
Sam turned over in his bed, unable to sleep. He was shaking and covered in sweat, having woken up with the nurse's screams in his ears. It had been a few days now since he had that nightmare, and he had hoped that they were gone.
Please no! PLEASE!
He tried to fake sleeping, but his brother was too good. "You ok, Sammy?"
"Yeah." Sam sat up, rubbing his eyes with a hand. "Just not tired."
"Uh huh."
Sam looked over at the clock. "It's almost morning anyway. I'll go get us breakfast."
Dean rolled over to watch Sam a moment. "Sam... take a gun with you."
It didn't take Sam long to get dressed and out the door. The feeling of the steel against his spine was a comfort. It was his safety, his protection now that he didn't have the powers anymore. He missed the days were it was just him and a gun, or a knife. Days where he didn't feel the twisting in his stomach and thirst in his mouth for the thick substance that had doomed them all.
Nothing good can come from this, Sam.
A woman crossed his path and he stopped, watching her as she made her way from her apartment to her car. He realized that he was staring just about the time he realized that she looked like Ruby. The hunger rose in him as well as all the pain and feelings of betrayal. It was so strong that he was barely able to turn his head and rush past her before walking into the next alley and lost what little was in his stomach.
The donut shop was already open and Sam got two coffees and a dozen donuts. Everything he choose was the ones he knew Dean liked. Ever since... the few months food really hadn't tasted the same so it was easier this way. He wasn't sure if Dean had noticed yet that Sam was doing it more than just to be a brother begging for forgiveness.
He wasn't sure how much longer he was going to be able to keep pulling this off. Dean already knew he had issues going, but if he knew just how bad the hunger was getting...
... maybe he was too far gone and just needed to be put down. A lot of hunters had thought so. And that girl at the bar last night. She had been sent to kill him. There were going to be more of them, and Dean was going to try and protect him and Sam couldn't bear it if Dean died...
No. He had to stick this through. He needed to help Dean get rid of Lucifer. Make up for all his own sins and once that was over... he just hoped Dean had one bullet left to put Sam out of his misery as well.
That was his thought as he was walking back to the motel and saw a familiar face walking out of a room not to far from his. He sighed, heading for his room and working to avoid her so that they wouldn't have to go through a round two.

And after talking to Sam, while they didn't like the idea of having her feeling that they needed her to take care of them, they weren't going to ignore her warnings either.
He grabbed his bag and Sam grabbed his own. "I'm sure we'll be seeing you around."

Sam scowled and leaned against the table, waiting.

She stayed silent as Willow did her thing on the other end of the line, remembering at the last minute to ask for another cell. When she hung up she felt mildly better.
"You're all set. Didn't trust you to get it taken care of quick enough, but now tracking of the mystical variety is gonna be damn near impossible. Don't do anything stupid and you should be good."

He turned to leave, his face emotionless. He wasn't all to happy with being called "Dumb and Dumber" and while he could understand and even appreciate her concern, it wasn't something he wanted and the fact she kept forcing it on them was irritating.

Time was she would have taken someone like Sam Winchester out and not even thought twice. She'd seen where that path had led her though, and in a weird way she was working not to repeat those mistakes. Strange how things changed.

He turned to look at her, his jaw grit. "Thank you," he said, then made his way to the Impala.
