justprompts - All I want For Christmas Is You

December 2004

"Please?"

"No."

"Sam, stop being such a damn Grinch and just put the star on top of the tree already."

Sighing, Sam pushed his textbook aside and got up, taking the silver star from Jess and reaching up to put it on the top of the almost 7 foot tall tree. Jess stood back, arms crossed and smiling. "Perfect."

"Can I go back to studying now?"

"Not yet." She reached into the box beside her and grabbed some tinsel, tossing it up to land on his head. Sam just rolled his eyes and looked at her with a scowl. "Seriously, Sam, lighten up. It's the holidays."

"I don't do holidays."

"And why not?"

Sam gave her the look. The one that said she shouldn't go there with him because he didn't like going to that place in his past. The one that said she was better off not knowing. She really hated that look, and he knew it, but that didn't change things. "I just don't." He brushed the tinsel off his head and went back to his spot on the couch, picking up the criminal justice textbook. He had an exam the next day.

Jess, however, wasn't one to give up. She grabbed some mistletoe and went to sit on his lap. "Well, I think you should start."

"Jess, I'm trying to study..." He gave her an exasperated look.

"And I'm trying to seduce you under the mistletoe." She was holding it over his head, smiling. "Unless you want me to go seduce someone else?"

That got his attention. "You wouldn't." The book was down, and Jess took her free hand to lift it off his lap and onto the ground as she wiggled closer.

"I dunno, Sam. Put a bit of egg nog in me, wrap me in tinsel and there are a lot of guys who would be dying to unwrap me." Now she was leaning against his chest. "I'll make a deal with you. Try to enjoy the holiday, just for me. And I'm not expecting you to turn into Mr. Christmas, but just, I dunno... smile. Stop grumbling when people talk about holiday plans. Actually wish a few people you like a Merry Christmas. Help me decorate the tree. And if you do all this, I will make sure that you have a very, extra Merry Christmas."

Sam just looked at her, then smiled. "If it means that much to you..."

Jess smirked in victory, then sealed the deal with a kiss.

October 2005

Hand in hand, the couple walked through the mall as Jess was looking for the perfect Halloween costume. Sam had to stop though as they passed the fourth store that was already decorating for Christmas. "Whatever happened to decorating for the current holiday?" he asked, shaking his head.

"It's just a way to remind people that Christmas is coming." Jess stopped and put a hand on his chest, getting him to look down at her. "I seem to remember that you actually enjoyed Christmas last year."

"You made me," he pointed out, but he smiled. She had kept her end of the deal that Christmas morning, and there was a tiny part of him that was even looking forward to this Christmas just to see what she planned on doing.

"And if you're a good little boy, I might just make this one even better." She got on her toes to kiss him, then pointed at the costume shop. "I'm going in. Don't you run off now."

"Call me when you're done. I'm going to wander a bit. Find something to drink."

Jess smiled and left him alone in the mall. He started towards the food court when he saw one of the jewelry shops putting new rings in the window with a Christmas display. He looked at the engagement rings, then back at the shop.

Actually, I think I have an idea on how to make yours better...

Two Months Later...

Sam stood at the motel window, watching the rain fall outside while a pathetic string of lights blinked across the parking lot. Dean was out getting them something to eat and Sam was supposed to be working on the case. But he just couldn't focus.

This wasn't how he had expected to spend Christmas. This Christmas was where he had planned to ask Jess to marry him. She loved the holiday so damn much he was going to make her always remember the love he felt for her in it.

And now that was ruined, his dreams turned to ash along with their apartment and her life. Ripped out of him before he realized how much it would hurt to have to live on. Keep his feet moving. Keep living.

And stare at a stupid string of lights around the office's front door that he just wanted to rip down with his own bare hands and smash each and every bulb until the pain was gone. Until he could go to sleep and not dream of her in flames on the ceiling.

He should have just kept hating Christmas and not let her make him care. It would have been easier. He had already been disappointed growing up on the holidays... but to add this to it now?

Seeing the Impala pulling back into the parking lot, Sam wiped away the tears from his face and made his way back to the laptop, trying to get lost in the words and pictures on the screen. To think about something else and hope to God that Dean didn't try to make him talk about doing something special tomorrow for the holiday.

It was going to take a lot to actually make Sam Winchester care about Christmas ever again.
