In Which Sam is finally able to do something right by his daughter...

It had been almost a month now since Sam had been called on his cell phone to go to the Des Moines juvenile court house and was told about what had happened to Cara and saw the little dark haired angel sitting in a chair too big for her, hugging a stuffed bunny.

A month since he had signed the custody papers taking responsibility for a daughter he had not known. A month since he had moved into the large house that was in Olivia's name and learned how to make peanut butter and banana sandwiches the "right way" and fight against the urge to answer the constant "I want my mommy, not you!" cries anytime something went wrong.

Dean was there, trying to support his brother in any way he could, but Sam couldn't help but feel like he was failing every night when the little girl refused to let Sam kiss her goodnight and tuck her into bed. She wanted her mommy, not him. And really, Sam didn't blame her in the least.

It changed one night though. Sam didn't even hear the thunderstorm roll in since he was usually dead to the world when he slept and Dean had gone out for the night. It wasn't until he felt the tiny eyes staring at him from the doorway that he opened his and looked over at Olivia.

"What's wrong, princess?" he asked softly, rolling onto his side. Then another lightning and thunder burst happened and Olivia just ran for the bed and jumped up, clinging to Sam as she shook in fear.

Sam instantly wrapped his arms around her, one hand carefully rubbing her back as the other pushed her hair out of her face. "Shh, it's ok, Olivia. It's just a storm."

"It's scawy," she spoke into his chest, and clung to him harder as another thunderclap rolled through the house.

"I know. But it can't hurt you." He thought for a moment. "Do you know that you can tell how far a storm is away from the thunder?" he asked.

Olivia looked up at him and shook her head. Sam smiled and rolled a bit onto his back so they could both look at the window that was closed. "The next time you see the lightning, count really slow and see how many numbers you can get to before you hear the thunder. If you get more numbers each time, the storm is going away."

"I can only cownt to ten."

"I can count with you. I can count to a million."

"Really?" She looked at him in awe. "That's a big number!"

"I know." There was lightning and Sam gave her a small smile. "Ok, let's count. One... two... three..." They counted together and got to seven before the thunder came. Sam noticed that Olivia didn't cling to him as hard this time.

"I think we can get to eight next time," he told her.

"I hope so. I don't like t'uner."

Sam just rubbed her back and the next lightning came and they counted, getting to nine. "See, it's going away. Nothing to be afraid of now."

"Can I stay here?" She asked softly, curling up at Sam's side. "Mommy a'ways let me sweep with her when I was scawed."

Sam gave her a small smile. "Of course you can, princess." Olivia smiled back and curled up against Sam's shoulder and started to count softly as the next lightning lit up the room, and he just counted softly with her each time until they both fell back asleep.
