The softer side of Sam

Ever since Ben's scare in the hospital, Sam had unconsciously opened the door to Beckett to a layer of him he normally didn't share with those not in his family. He actually felt he was able to be a bit more of himself around her. Things that only Diana and Dean had ever seen in him, he wasn't as worried about Kate seeing now.

He had started to do some things in the hospital during the times Ben was sleeping. Eventually the kids down in the pediatric ward had gotten used to him coming in and reading some stories, and it reminded him of when he used to take care of Diane when she was sick as a kid and Samantha had to work.

There were a few kids who were long term residents, and he tried hard to make them laugh and smile when he came down to visit, especially since two of them barely had any visitors during the day.

The afternoon that Beckett found him, he was standing in the middle of the playroom, acting out a monster story that he had read so many times that he knew it by heart. "... and the monster knew he didn't have a chance as the little girl sat up in her bed and pulled out the flashlight and yelled -"

"GO AWAY BIG GREEN MONSTER!" the kids shouted and then laughed as Sam grabbed his heart, falling back on the floor like the kids had just killed the story monster.

Now Beckett was able to see her partner's face. Apparently he had a scary paper mask on, and a black ball nose on his own. She looked down at him, unable to hide the smirk on her face. "That's a nice look for you, Winchester."

The kids laughed as Sam jumped up, pulling the mask off his eyes quickly. "The kids like it," he stated. "Makes the stories real."

"Maybe you should wear it on the next case. You could be the bad monster cop, and I'll be the good human cop."

Sam rolled his eyes, not wanting to get into just how scarily accurate that could be at times. But he did smile a bit. "Seeing you play the good cop would be interesting."

"Don't think I can do it?" she asked, crossing her arms.

"I know you can, but something's missing." He took his nose off and quickly put it on her. "There. No one can be afraid of a big nose like that."

Beckett just stared at him, and Sam smiled and reached over to squeeze the nose, letting it squeak and the kids behind them laughed.
