mad_muses: ...remember me, once in awhile, please promise me you'
Cos all of the stars
Are fading away
Just try not to worry
You'll see them some day
Take what you need
And be on your way
And stop crying your heart out

The nightmares were horrible, and Sam could barely sleep for weeks after it happened. He closed his eyes and all he saw was her on the ceiling, whispering his name before bursting into flames. Sometimes her eyes were sad, and sometimes they were angry and full of blame.
Every time he woke up to find Dean looking over at him, worried eyes not sure what to say to make it better. It was the first time Dean wasn't going to be able to solve a problem of his. Only later would Sam realize that it was the first of many.
But one time, Dean was standing there with a cup of coffee, a small smirk on his face. "Drink this. It'll keep you up for a few hours."
"Thanks." Sam ran his hand through his hair, then took the cup. Dean tilted his head, then motioned towards Sam's wrist.
"You expecting to grow it out long enough to make a little topknot?"
"Huh?" Sam looked at his wrist, then his expression fell. "Oh. No."
Dean noticed the look and sat on the bed opposite from him. "It's Jess', huh?"
Sam nodded, thinking back to a few weeks ago...
"Hey, everything’s gonna be okay. I will be back in time - I promise." Sam kissed her, then headed for the door, knowing that Dean was waiting downstairs and wasn't the patient one.
He heard Jess shouting after him, "At least tell me where you’re going," and turned to see her run into the living room.
"Not that far." He took her by her shoulders and just held her. "Jess, I'll be back before you know it. Trust me, ok?"
"Trust isn't the issue. But I know how you get when you get caught up in something. The rest of the world disappears around you." She licked her lips, then took the hair band off her wrist and snapped it onto his wrist.
"Ow," Sam muttered, rubbing his wrist. The band was barely big enough to wrap around it and it was denting the skin.
"Remember that sting? Now every time you see that hairband, you'll think of me and your interview and not get caught up in this adventure to find your dad. Alright?"
The horn of the Impala sounded and Sam rolled his eyes. "I'm going to lose feeling in my fingers, but sure." He cupped her cheeks to kiss her again. "I'll see you in a few days."
"I'll be here."
Dean sighed, not saying anything as he stood up. However, he paused a moment and squeezed his brother's shoulder. "Take a shower. I already deal with your gas, I don't need to smell your B.O. in my car either."
Sam chuckled, looking up at his brother with a grateful look at the change of subject. "I'll buy you a scented tree."
"Hell no, I ain't hanging one of them in my baby! You try and I'll put it somewhere else that needs it more." Dean pointed at Sam in a mock threat, then picked up a doughnut. "Get a move on. Things to hunt. People to save. Ain't happening with you sitting on yours ass, Sammy boy."
Sam just finished his coffee and waved his brother off as he headed for the shower. As he started the water, he took a look at his wrist and noticed that the band had stretched out to fit the width of it. He smiled sadly as he gently plucked it to snap against his skin, then sighed and climbed into the shower to start the day.
